Squarespace

If you decide to work with me, the system used to build your website is Squarespace, this is also where your site will be hosted. I love it, and clients do too. I have worked with WordPress in the past, but not anymore. Too often, I had to try to rescue websites that no longer worked because clients forgot to do updates to the software, plugins, and widgets. I can understand that: as a busy entrepreneur, it is a challenge to do all the updates and backups required with a WordPress website. Squarespace is a self-contained platform and does all these things for you, which is very nice.

I am a Squarespace Circle Member, which means you get 20% off your hosting for the first year and your trial period (in which your site is under construction, and you don’t pay for hosting yet) is six months instead of two weeks. Also, you can get 20% off Scheduling, should you need it.

Outsource or
do it yourself?

No doubt you want a beautiful, unique, highly converting website. But is it worth the investment? If you are unsure whether to create a website yourself or hire someone to do it, there are a few things to consider.

  • Design - do you have an eye for this, so that your website will become a harmonious composition of everything you want to show, and potential customers will choose you instead of the competitor?

  • Technology - the systems we use today to create websites are not difficult, but you have to get the hang of it. Are you willing and able to spend time on this?

  • Marketing - a site obviously has to work for you, do you have the time and interest to learn about this aspect?

If the above points are fine for you, and you have the time, then I would do it myself if I were you! If you think it would be better for you to spend your time on other things, things in which you excel, then I can create a great website for you :-).

Who does what?

It depends, every situation is different. Most clients provide the copy themselves, with or without my assistance. It should be written in a strategic way so that your site can be easily found in search engines. I usually help clients with the structure of the site. Together we decide what’s important and what's not. Any images we want to work with can be edited to match the design of your site. I can also look for stock photos (or videos). Sometimes it is a good idea to work with graphics. I can, for example, design banners for you. Maybe you already have a corporate identity, or you work with certain colors and/or fonts. We can incorporate this into your website. But if you don’t, no worries, I can help you with this.

The design usually comes magically to life once I spend some time with it. As you can see in my portfolio, no website is the same. This is because of the elements I mentioned above, but also because everyone has something different to offer. Sometimes there is a common thread in your life that can be a valuable addition. Or we can show a bit of your personality. These are examples that will automatically make your website unique.

How does it work

  • We organize a call or have coffee together so that I can get a clear picture of what you do and what you want. 

    • What will be the main purpose of your site?

    • How many pages do you think you need? Think home, about, services, portfolio, blog, contact? 

    • And what kind of features do you need? For instance, do you want people to be able to sign up for a newsletter, schedule appointments, and log into a member area, do you want to show your social media accounts on your site? When do you want your new website to be ready? 

    • Do you already have a corporate identity? 

    • Do you write your own texts, or will you need my help with that? 

    • Will you supply your own images, or should I be looking for them?

  • Once I get an idea, I'll send you a proposal (timeframe, quote). If you decide to go for it, we’ll begin.

  • Via a shared Dropbox folder I will share with you, or via WeTransfer if you prefer, you will send me everything you have in terms of content for your site (logos, images, other graphics or artwork, copy (all texts), videos), maybe you have a mood board (often clients make one on Pinterest and I love it). Once I have everything, and it is all clear for me, I’ll start working on your site!

  • I will create a Squarespace account for you, from that moment we have a 6-month trial. There are two revision rounds included in the price, beforehand we’ll agree on a timeframe. You share your feedback, and I’ll implement everything we discussed.

  • When we are both happy, we can launch your new website! I’ll connect your URL to your Squarespace account and send you the ownership of the site. I will then provide you with a number of documents explaining how to make changes to your site yourself. If you don't want to do that yourself, you can hire me of course.

Price &
payment

What to expect in terms of price? Every website is unique, so I can only give you an indication, based on projects I have done. If you only need an online business card, it will cost around €700. A simple 1-3 page website is usually between €1000 and €1600. If you need a slightly larger website (4-6 pages) it starts at €1900 and 7+ pages at €2800. All these prices exclude VAT. The final price also depends on all functionalities that need to be built in, such as a blog, shop, contact form, newsletter system, social media integration, photo or video gallery, a search function, reservation system, or appointment scheduler. Or maybe you have a multilingual website. The price also depends on how much of your own time you’ll be putting into this project. Will you deliver the content yourself, and to what extent do you already have ideas about the layout, do you already know how your site can best be optimized for the search engines? I usually ask you to pay half of the price before we start and the rest when it's done, but we agree on that beforehand. I understand it can be a bit scary to invest in this. But since we keep fine-tuning your website until everything feels right, there’s no risk of spending money on something you're not 100% satisfied with. It is also possible to hire me for maintenance or adjustments on your website. I charge €85 per hour excluding VAT.
